Finland Seeks Ice Hockey World Championships โ Tampere Out
Finland and Latvia have submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 men's Ice Hockey World Championships, with Helsinki as the primary venue, leaving Tampere out of the consideration.
Finland, alongside Latvia, has officially submitted a joint bid to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to host the 2030 men's Ice Hockey World Championships. According to Heikki Hietanen, the president of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and member of the IIHF board, no other candidates have stepped forward for the event. The main games are to be held in Helsinki, emphasizing the city's vast market potential as the hosting area for this prestigious tournament.
While Tampere was initially part of discussions for hosting, recent negotiations led to the decision to prioritize Helsinki. Hietanen stated that considering all essential factors, including location and infrastructure, Helsinki presented a more favorable option for organizing the championships. The event would not only include group stage games in Helsinki but also feature quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches, which could significantly boost the local economy and visibility of ice hockey in the region.
The inclusion of Riga, Latviaโs capital, as a co-host adds a significant international dimension to the championship, allowing for a collaborative effort that enhances fan engagement across both nations. This joint venture is poised to foster closer ties between the two countries while celebrating the sport, making it a notable prospect for ice hockey enthusiasts in both Finland and Latvia as the 2030 date approaches.
