UP announces major enforcement next week
The UP police chief announced an upcoming targeted enforcement campaign focusing on illegal mobile use while driving and improper seatbelt use, emphasizing their impact on traffic safety.
Knut Smedsrud, the chief of the UP (Utrykningspolitiet), announced that next week their enforcement actions will specifically target illegal mobile phone use and improper seatbelt usage in vehicles. These practices frequently lead to fatal traffic incidents, and while many drivers are cautious, challenges remain, particularly among truck drivers and on highways.
The first enforcement week of the Utrykningspolitiet in 2026 is set to kick off on Monday, coinciding with a rise in penalties for violations. The fee for using a mobile phone while driving has increased to 10,750 Norwegian kroner, while failing to wear a seatbelt incurs a penalty of 1,500 kroner. These measures are part of wider efforts to enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of traffic-related fatalities.
According to analysis by the Statens vegvesen, lack of attention contributes to one in three traffic deaths, which underscores the critical need for these enforcement measures. In 2024, there were 21 reported traffic fatalities attributed to negligence, highlighting the ongoing challenges in improving driver awareness and adherence to safety regulations.
