Ibirapuera proposes a 35 million reais gym in a historical sawmill

A proposal to create an indoor exercise area at Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo, including a gym for weightlifting and crossfit, has sparked controversy among environmental and historical conservation groups.

Urbia, the concessionaire responsible for Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo, is set to present a proposal to the park's management council to develop a gym facility in the historical structure known as the 'Antiga Serraria'. This proposed gym would include areas for indoor exercises such as weightlifting and crossfit, marking a significant shift from the current usage of the space, which has traditionally been a venue for yoga, tai chi, and other meditative body practices. While the proposal aims to enhance recreational facilities, it has met with resistance due to fears that the space would be commercialized, echoing concerns from a previous project that suggested a commercial center could be built in its place.

Opponents of the proposal, including groups focused on environmental and historical conservation, have mobilized against the changes. Their efforts led to the withdrawal of the proposal from the agenda of Conpresp, the municipal council of heritage preservation, on the last Monday (9). These groups argue that any alteration to the historical architecture of the area, particularly a construction from the 1930s that previously functioned as a tramway workshop, should be carried out with caution to preserve the cultural heritage of the city.

The controversy surrounding this proposal highlights the ongoing tension between urban development and the preservation of historical and cultural landmarks in São Paulo. As public spaces continue to evolve, striking a balance between modern recreational needs and historical conservation remains a pressing issue for the community and local authorities, influencing not only the local environment but also the cultural identity of the area.
