United Way BC defends handling of Lapu Lapu donations
United Way BC has defended its response and handling of donations following the Lapu Lapu tragedy, emphasizing their immediate support for victims' families and the establishment of a dedicated fund.
In the wake of the tragic Lapu Lapu incident on April 26, where 11 individuals lost their lives, United Way British Columbia has stepped up to provide crucial assistance to the victims' families. The organization's president and CEO, Michael McKnight, highlighted the immediate efforts made by their team, which included reaching out to families to assess their urgent needs. Support was provided for various critical expenses such as rent, travel assistance for relatives needing to reach Vancouver, and burial costs. These actions aimed to ease the financial burden during an extraordinarily difficult time for those affected.
Moreover, McKnight shared that United Way BC worked closely with the Vancouver Police Department's victim services as well as social workers to ensure comprehensive support for those grieving. This collaborative approach not only facilitated immediate aid but also built an infrastructure for ongoing support. On April 30, just four days post-tragedy, United Way launched the Kapwa Strong Fund, pledging that 100% of all contributions would directly assist those impacted by the event.
The creation of the Kapwa Strong Fund seeks to address both the immediate and long-term needs of the victims' families as they navigate this unprecedented tragedy. By ensuring that all donations go directly to support those affected, United Way BC aims to foster a sense of community resilience and solidarity in the aftermath of this horrific event. McKnight's defense underscores their commitment to transparency and accountable support as they continue to assist those in need during this challenging period.
