More questions about Lapu Lapu donations and where the money went

Questions are being raised about the distribution of over $2 million in donations following the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party tragedy in Vancouver.

Ten months after the tragic mass killing at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, the allocation of the donations collected has come under scrutiny. Alejandro Samper, a victim’s family member, expressed his heartbreak and anger as he emphasized that the funds were meant to support victims' families. The incident, which resulted in the deaths of eleven individuals, has left a lasting impact on the community, and the management of the donated funds is now a focal point for many affected.

According to the Filipino B.C.’s Crisis Response Impact report, United Way BC successfully raised over $2 million in donations after the incident, with a substantial portion, $1.57 million, channeled into the Kapwa Strong Fund. This fund was tasked with distributing 45 grants to 36 agencies, targeting relief and support for those impacted by the tragedy. Additionally, nearly a quarter of the total donations, amounting to $451,470, was allocated specifically to support the work of Filipino BC, highlighting the importance of targeted community support following such incidents.

However, there are calls for transparency regarding how these funds are being utilized. Samper, representing the victims’ families, has urged Filipino BC to provide clearer information on the spending of the donations. This concern not only reflects the need for accountability but also represents the broader issues of trust and community engagement in the aftermath of a tragedy. As the investigation into the funding unfolds, many are left wondering whether the intended support is reaching those who need it most, underlining the critical importance of transparent fund management in community crises.
