More than 27,000 liters of diesel destined for illegal mining on the Sararé Indigenous Land seized in MT
Over 27,000 liters of diesel intended for illegal mining activities in the Sararé Indigenous Land were seized by federal police in Brazil.
On Monday, October 9th, Brazilian federal police seized more than 27,000 liters of diesel fuel meant for illegal mining operations on the Sararé Indigenous Land, located in Pontes e Lacerda, around 483 kilometers from Cuiabá. The seizure took place during a routine inspection on BR-174B, where police stopped three vehicles that were transporting the fuel, indicating that an organized supply chain for illegal mining activities exists in the region.
During the operation, one of the truck drivers abandoned his vehicle and fled into a forested area upon spotting the police officers. The three trucks and the entire load of diesel have been handed over to the Civil Police for further investigation. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges that law enforcement faces in curbing illegal mining in protected indigenous territories, which have serious environmental and social consequences.
The illegal mining activities in Brazil's indigenous lands have raised significant concerns among environmentalists and indigenous rights advocates, as they often lead to deforestation, pollution, and violence against indigenous communities. The authorities must intensify their efforts to combat these illegal operations to protect both the environment and the rights of the indigenous peoples living in these areas.
