Operation destroys more than 20 pieces of equipment used in illegal mining in the Sararé Indigenous Land (MT)
An operation in the Sararé Indigenous Land in Brazil destroyed various pieces of equipment used for illegal mining, involving a confrontation between police and miners.
On Sunday, an operation was conducted in the northwest region of Sararé Indigenous Land, specifically in an area known as Garimpo da Taca, resulting in the destruction of 23 dredges, 12 diving barges, and five excavators related to illegal mining activities. The Civil Police reported that the miners themselves recorded images showing the destroyed equipment shortly after the operation concluded. This highlights both the scale of illegal mining in the area and the efforts being made to combat it.
Additionally, the police seized evidence and instruments linked to these illegal activities, which included logistical support materials utilized by the miners. The operation also faced significant violence, as the police were met with gunfire from the miners during the intervention. Despite this violent confrontation, the police managed to carry out their mission to neutralize the mining machinery but noted that the criminals were able to escape the scene.
The ongoing illegal mining in Sararé is deeply intertwined with issues affecting the indigenous community, including violence and lawlessness as highlighted by indigenous reports of unrest caused by illegal factions. This operation underscores the Brazilian authorities' continued attempts to curb illegal mining within indigenous territories, although challenges remain in securing the lands and ensuring the safety of both the environment and local populations.
