Delta residents, business owners protest poor power supply
Residents and business owners in Delta State protest against inadequate power supply and high tariffs imposed by BEDC Electricity Plc.
Residents and business owners in Effurun and the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State staged a peaceful protest, voicing their frustrations over persistent poor electricity supply. They called upon the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to investigate the Band A metering system that is being implemented by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in their locality. The demonstrators described the power supply as 'epileptic,' claiming that despite their compliance with the metering system, the power provided is insufficient and inconsistent.
The protesters specifically highlighted the discrepancies in their electricity consumption, stating that even while being metered and categorically placed under the 'Band A' distribution for what was supposed to be reliable power supply, BEDC has failed to deliver the minimum 20 hours of electricity daily as mandated by NERC regulations. This inadequacy has placed significant strain on their businesses and daily lives, leading to economic losses and an overall decline in life quality in the region.
In addition to their call for regulatory oversight, the community raised concerns regarding the exorbitant electricity bills that continue to pile up despite the lack of adequate service. They emphasized that high electricity tariffs do not reflect the reality of their power supply situation. This protest not only highlights the immediate grievances felt by the community members but also sheds light on broader issues related to energy distribution in Nigeria, calling for systemic change in the electricity sector to ensure reliable supply and reasonable billing for all consumers.
