Osun residents protest blackout, give IBEDC seven-day ultimatum
Residents of Osun State protested against poor electricity supply and issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to improve services.
Residents in Osun State, Nigeria, have expressed their frustrations over ongoing electricity supply issues by staging a protest at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) office in Osogbo. The demonstration unfolded after a prolonged period of inadequate power supply, which the residents described as persistent and unacceptable. Protesters gathered at Oke Baale and marched towards the IBEDC office, where they rallied considering the presence of heavy security, which added to the tension.
The demonstrators carried banners and chanted for better electricity services while advocating for their communities to be upgraded from a lower band classification, which they believe does not reflect their needs. In a firm stance, they presented a letter demanding that IBEDC restore affected communities to a higher service classification within seven days. They warned of collective community actions, indicating their anger and determination to see changes regarding their electricity supply.
The situation highlights the severe issues residents face with electricity in the region, alongside their readiness to mobilize for action should their demands be ignored. This protest serves as a reminder of the larger energy challenges across Nigeria and the pressing need for distribution companies to meet service expectations and ensure stable electricity supply to its customers, or face the repercussions of community-led initiatives.
