Residents, business owners decry poor power supply in Lagos communities

Residents and business owners in Lagos State are expressing frustration over the persistent poor electricity supply provided by the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company.

Residents and business owners in Lagos communities such as Igando, Isheri, Idimu, and Ikotun have raised urgent concerns regarding the chronic poor electricity supply from the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company. In interviews with PUNCH Metro, they highlighted how this persistent issue has severely affected their living conditions, with many descriptions of the situation as deteriorating, particularly over the past few weeks. Business owners have also noted that unreliable power has consistently increased their operational costs, creating additional challenges for day-to-day activities.

One resident from Idimu, Abosede Akitan, voiced her frustrations, stating that electricity is rarely available during the day, and even when it is restored, the supply is fleeting. She described the current state of living conditions as severely compromised due to the lack of reliable power, leaving residents dismayed and feeling unfairly treated by the distribution company. The insufficiency of electricity has become a major concern, with long durations of darkness contributing to the rising issue of insecurity in the area.

Furthermore, the residents' concerns go beyond just discomfort; they underline a broader problem of inadequate infrastructure and customer service from the electricity provider. As streets remain unlit for long hours at night, residents fear for their safety, pointing to a connection between the lack of electricity and increasing criminal activities. This situation not only impacts their current quality of life but could also hinder future development in these communities if not addressed adequately by the appropriate authorities.
