Latvian Oncologist Among the First Recipients of the European Order of Merit

Latvian oncologist Lejniece has been nominated for the European Order of Merit, alongside notable figures including Angela Merkel and Volodymyr Zelensky.

Daina Lejniece, a prominent oncologist from Latvia, has received a nomination for the prestigious European Order of Merit, an accolade recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the ideals of Europe. This nomination was put forth by the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Daiga Mieriņa, highlighting its national importance. The award seeks to honor those who have courageously worked to overcome challenges in society, fostering unity and positive change across Europe.

The award ceremony will take place in Strasbourg in May, where Lejniece and other distinguished individuals will be publicly celebrated. Among these is former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the British rock band U2 led by Bono. This assembly of influential figures signifies a collective acknowledgment of those who strive to build a better future in Europe, reflecting the enduring spirit and commitment to democracy and unity.

Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, emphasized the importance of recognizing the efforts of both men and women who have fought against dictatorship and crisis to bring about societal changes.
