V. Zelensky, A. Merkel and L. Walesa β the first laureates of the European Order of Merit
Volodymyr Zelensky, Angela Merkel, and Lech Walesa have been recognized as the inaugural recipients of the European Order of Merit.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, announced that the European Order of Merit will honor those who have not only believed in Europe but have contributed to its development. By overcoming disputes, breaking down barriers, and toppling dictatorships, these individuals embody the dedication to the future of the continent. The award aims to celebrate this European commitment, and the three leaders - Zelensky, Merkel, and Walesa - represent influential figures in this journey.
The award ceremony is set to take place in May at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. In addition to the three prominent political leaders, further awards will be given to current and former heads of European countries or political institutions, as well as personalities from the sports and cultural sectors, including members of the rock band U2.
This recognition not only highlights the achievements of these individuals but also symbolizes the collaboration and unity that Europe strives for in the face of various challenges. The initiative shows the European Parliament's commitment to honoring those who have significantly impacted Europe and inspired future generations.
