IWD: UNICEF unveils podcast to amplify girls’ voices in Kano
UNICEF launched a podcast in Kano aimed at amplifying the voices of adolescent girls as part of the International Women's Day 2026 celebrations.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) inaugurated the "Yes! Girls Podcast Watch Session" in Kano on Tuesday, contributing to the 2026 International Women's Day celebrations. This initiative aimed to provide a platform for adolescent girls to express their thoughts, discuss challenges, and brainstorm solutions related to their rights and well-being. The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including adolescent girls themselves, government officials, Civil Society Organisations, and media representatives, all focused on enhancing girls' leadership and empowerment.
Ngozi Izuora-Songu, the UNICEF Adolescent Development Specialist, highlighted that the "Yes! Girls Podcast" is a youth-driven digital platform specifically designed by adolescent girls for their peers across Nigeria. This initiative aims to create a safe environment for girls aged 9 to 19 to openly discuss issues that concern them, such as education, mental health, menstrual hygiene, gender equality, and climate action. By leveraging the podcast format, it addresses contemporary issues that resonate with the youth and encourages them to be proactive in voicing their concerns.
This launch not only marks a significant step toward empowering young girls in Kano but also reflects a broader commitment to youth engagement and gender equality in Nigeria. The event's alignment with International Women’s Day emphasizes the need for continued dialogue and support for girls' rights and well-being, advocating for their roles as future leaders in society. By amplifying these voices, UNICEF hopes to foster a culture of inclusion and empowerment that extends beyond the podcast itself, leading to tangible improvements in the lives of young girls in the region.
