When you pay three euros for this box, you get your money back – A new trial has started in these K- and S-stores
A new trial in Finland allows customers at selected K- and S-stores to use a refundable take-away box for food purchases.
A new initiative has launched in Finland involving selected K- and S-stores, where customers can pay three euros for a reusable take-away box designed for salads and warm meals. After filling the box, customers can return it at a designated return machine for a refund, after which the box will be cleaned for future use. This trial, involving extensive cooperation from various companies, aims to reduce single-use plastics and promote sustainability in food packaging.
The pilot program, dubbed the Kiertis trial, is currently being conducted in four stores located in shopping centers in Espoo, specifically at Sellon and Lippulaivan. These locations were chosen due to a significant demand from consumers for more sustainable packaging options. Representatives from the stores reported that many customers have anticipated similar practices for their lunch containers, showcasing a growing interest in eco-friendly shopping options among Finnish consumers.
Overall, the Kiertis initiative involves the production of 10,000 boxes made from biobased polypropylene by Orthex Finland. This trial is set to run until the end of May, and its outcomes will potentially influence future policies regarding packaging in the retail environment, aligning with broader sustainability goals both locally and nationally.
