Royal Mail 'swap' reminder issued to avoid paying £2.50 fee from April

Royal Mail customers are reminded to utilize the 'Swap Out' scheme to avoid upcoming fees for using outdated stamps starting April 7.

Royal Mail has issued a reminder for customers to take advantage of its 'Swap Out' scheme to avoid fees associated with non-barcoded stamps. As stamp prices are set to increase on April 7, with some costs reaching just shy of £1, the importance of replacing old stamps cannot be overstated. This scheme allows users to swap their outdated stamps, which will be invalid in the near future, helping to avoid any hidden charges when sending mail.

The MoneySavingExpert team, headed by financial expert Martin Lewis, has highlighted that post sent with non-barcoded stamps, which have been considered outdated since July 2023, will incur penalties if used beyond the stipulated time. Any outdated stamps used after the deadline in April will mean that customers will either be charged a surcharge of £2.50 for letters or £3.50 for small parcels. These fees underline the need for users to inspect their postage before mailing, particularly as transitioning to a new system of barcoded stamps is mandatory by 2026.

As Royal Mail anticipates the impact of these changes, it serves as a call to action for customers to adapt to the modern requirements of mailing. The introduction of barcoded stamps aims to enhance security and tracking for mailed items, offering customers more convenience. Failure to comply with using valid postage after the transition could significantly impact regular postal users, especially those who may not be keeping abreast of these changes, leading to unnecessary costs and inconvenience during mail preparations.
