6% Salary Increase for Teachers in the Municipal Network Approved by the Teresina Chamber
The Teresina City Council has approved a 6% salary increase for public school teachers in an urgent vote.
On Tuesday morning, the Teresina City Council approved a 6% salary increase for teachers in the municipal public education system, which was passed under urgent proceedings. This legislative initiative was passed in two votes and is designed to be retroactive to January 2026, ensuring pay increases for first and second-cycle teachers, as well as pedagogues and psychopedagogues. The law proposal was put forward by the Teresina City Hall.
The increase is notably higher than the 5.4% salary adjustment announced by the Ministry of Education at the beginning of the year through a provisional measure. Mayor Silvio Mendes (part of the UniΓ£o Brasil party) emphasized that this increase was built in consideration of current budget constraints while balancing the need for salary adjustments with fiscal responsibility. The adjustments are intended to reflect a commitment to supporting education professionals in Teresina.
This approval is part of a broader legislative session as the City Council opened the 2026 legislative year, highlighting ongoing discussions around budgetary matters and educational reforms in the city. As such, this salary increase not only benefits educators but also underscores the city's efforts to prioritize education and teacher welfare amid financial planning challenges.
