MP investigates alleged irregularity in emergency decree from the municipality of Curral de Cima
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraíba is investigating a possible irregularity in an emergency declaration by the Curral de Cima municipality due to alleged inconsistent meteorological data.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraíba (MPPB) has launched a civil inquiry to investigate a potential irregularity related to the state of emergency declared by the Curral de Cima municipality. This investigation was triggered in February following an anonymous complaint submitted to the MPPB's Ombudsman. The controversial decree was issued on January 9, 2025, claiming an emergency situation that would last for 180 days, ostensibly due to a water crisis.
However, data presented by the State Water Management Agency of Paraíba raised eyebrows, indicating that Curral de Cima received a substantial amount of rainfall—947.1 millimeters—in 2024, showing a dramatic increase of 172.86% compared to 347.1 millimeters in 2023. The MPPB has expressed concerns over the validity of the emergency declaration, questioning whether the municipality genuinely faced an emergency situation based on these meteorological figures.
Officials from the MPPB also mentioned their failed attempts to contact the municipal government for a statement regarding the decree. This situation adds layers of complexity to governmental accountability and raises questions about the proper use of emergency declarations, which can have significant implications for resource allocation and government transparency.
