Mitsotakis from Paris: Small nuclear reactors can save Greece’s energy autonomy
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the potential of small nuclear reactors for enhancing Greece’s energy independence during a summit in Paris.
At the Paris Summit, where 41 countries and international organizations participated, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of nuclear energy, particularly small nuclear reactors, in addressing Greece's increasing electricity demand and reducing its reliance on coal. He noted that Greece had the opportunity to pursue nuclear energy as early as the 1970s but opted for other energy sources, ensuring affordable prices.
Mitsotakis pointed out that renewable energy sources (RES) alone would not be sufficient to meet future energy needs, no matter how much they are expanded, and stressed that the country must consider the use of small modular reactors to ensure energy autonomy. "We cannot achieve energy independence without nuclear energy," he asserted, indicating a significant shift in the country’s energy policy towards nuclear options in light of contemporary challenges.
To facilitate this transition, a special inter-ministerial committee will be established to explore the role of nuclear energy in Greece's energy strategy. Mitsotakis conveyed a readiness to embark on a new chapter amid significant global energy turbulence, reflecting the government’s proactive approach towards modernizing Greece's energy mix and enhancing national security through diverse energy sources.
