Meteorologist: Flood risks in Latvia decrease, but the situation in the Daugava basin remains unclear

The flood risks in many parts of Latvia have significantly decreased, although the situation in the Daugava basin remains uncertain due to upcoming ice movement.

The meteorologist Andris Vīksna from the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) has stated that the risks of spring flooding in various parts of Latvia have greatly diminished compared to forecasts from two to three weeks ago. The peak of flooding in Kurzeme has passed, while ice movement is expected in the Lielupe basin and other areas like the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers in the coming days. Overall, the flood threat has lessened at critical locations in the Gauja basin near Carnikava.

As is typical, the ice movement will conclude with the Daugava basin, where ice movement is anticipated for next week. However, the flood situation along the Daugava river is still not fully predictable, with peak flooding possibly occurring in the latter half of March, depending on remaining snow and ice thickness. The meteorologist emphasized the need for continued monitoring as conditions can change quickly with warming temperatures.

Overall, the situation reflects a cautiously optimistic outlook in many regions of Latvia, even as uncertainty persists for the Daugava basin. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain vigilant despite the overall reduction in flooding risk across the country.
