Meteorologists forecast: floods will continue in the coming days

Flooding is expected to continue in rivers as snow melts and ice breaks, with water levels rising in many areas according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

In Latvia, riverbanks are expected to experience continued flooding in the coming days as snow melts and ice breaks, leading to increased water flow, as reported by the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Centre (LVÄ¢MC). While some rivers in Kurzeme are witnessing a decrease in water levels, many still show significant increases, particularly in the western parts where ice has already melted or is in the process of melting, causing potential ice jams in certain areas.

The LVÄ¢MC highlights that in the Daugava River, water levels have risen by one to 19 centimeters over the past 24 hours, with the lower sections near Andrejosta experiencing a six-centimeter rise. In contrast, some areas within the Daugava basin have shown fluctuating or decreasing levels by six to 17 centimeters, but other rivers like the Aiviekste continue to see increases of 13 to 17 centimeters. This variability suggests that while flooding is ongoing, there are localized changes occurring within the river systems.

As flood conditions develop, particularly in regions such as Kurzeme where low-lying areas have already begun to flood, the situation requires continued monitoring and assessment from meteorological authorities. The potential for ice jams and the uneven rise and fall of water levels across different rivers highlight the complexities of managing flood risks in the face of changing weather conditions, particularly with the onset of warmer temperatures affecting the snow and ice.
