The Ministry of Agriculture in Latvia has advised farmers to assess their fields and livestock's safety in light of potential flooding due to rising water levels.
In response to the potential rapid rise in water levels in rivers and the risk of flooding, the Ministry of Agriculture (ZM) of Latvia has called on farmers to evaluate the situation on their farms and land areas. They advise that agricultural animals should be evacuated from lower areas prone to flooding to safer and higher grounds. Moreover, farmers are recommended to timely relocate feed, equipment, and other farm resources that might be damaged in the event of floods.
Additionally, the ministry informs residents to prepare for the extensive flooding that could disrupt electricity supply and communications. They highlight that the website of the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Centre (LVÄ¢MC) provides accessible flood risk and flood threat maps. This proactive approach aims to enhance awareness and preparedness among those potentially affected by the natural disasters.
The ministry attributes the current concerns to the harsh winter of 2026, which resulted in substantial snow accumulation and ice thickness across Latvia. As temperatures rise, there is an increased risk of widespread and dangerous flooding, making these advisory measures crucial for safeguarding both farm and community safety in the region.
