Yellow Warning for Flooding Areas in Force

Latvia has issued a yellow warning for flooding as water levels continue to rise in several rivers across the country, particularly in Kurzeme and the Lielupe basin.

In Latvia, an increase in water levels is being observed in most rivers, with the situation deteriorating rapidly in Kurzeme's rivers and the tributaries of the Lielupe. According to operational data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, ice flows are occurring in several rivers, accompanied by melting ice and water flow over the ice cover. A yellow warning is currently in effect across the western and central parts of the country, signaling the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

Hydrologists predict that the coming days will see further ice breakup and movement along longer stretches of rivers. While water levels are expected to continue rising in most water bodies, some of the smaller watercourses in Kurzeme might see a retreat of water levels. However, during the ice movement, ice jams are likely to form, which could lead to increased water levels upstream of these blockages.

Specifically, rivers in Kurzeme, such as the Bārta and Rīva, have experienced the sharpest increases—about 1.5 meters since the end of February, while the water level in the Bērze river at Līvbērze has risen by 1.8 meters. These rising levels indicate that certain areas remain vulnerable to flooding, as water levels are expected to remain elevated for the next few days.
