Prosecutors raid Yanolja and Here We Go, suspected of abusing advertising coupons against small businesses

South Korean prosecutors have launched a search of the headquarters of the lodging reservation platforms Yanolja and Here We Go over allegations of unfair business practices against small lodging providers.

In a significant development, South Korean prosecutors initiated a raid on the offices of Yanolja and Here We Go, two prominent lodging reservation platforms. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office has opened a forced investigation into allegations that these companies caused financial harm to small business operators within the hospitality sector. The investigation particularly concerns claims that these platforms engaged in unfair practices under South Korea's Fair Trade Act by failing to refund unused discount coupons sold as part of advertising products, thereby allowing them to expire without any compensation to the small businesses involved.

This investigation stems from a prior complaint by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, which reported potential violations of fair trading laws by both companies in January. The ministry utilized the obligation reporting request system, which mandates that if the Fair Trade Commission does not prosecute a case referred by the ministry, the commission is required to forward it to the prosecutors. Yanolja and Here We Go are alleged to have improperly retained a significant sum of money derived from unrefunded coupons, leading to substantial penalties from the Fair Trade Commission in August of the previous year.

The implications of this investigation are significant for both the companies and the small business sector in South Korea. The actions of Yanolja and Here We Go, which reportedly sold advertising products including discount coupons worth millions, but subsequently allowed these coupons to expire, raises critical questions about the fairness and ethical practices in the advertising sector. As the investigation unfolds, it may lead to stricter regulations and oversight in the industry, potentially impacting how large platforms interact with smaller suppliers and altering the competitive landscape in the lodging reservation market.
