Creating a Canola Field at Cheongju Landmark ‘Sangdangsanseong’... Enjoy Flowers in All Seasons

Cheongju City has announced the creation of a canola field at Sangdangsanseong, aiming to enhance the site's seasonal beauty and attract visitors throughout the year.

Cheongju City has embarked on a project to create a canola field covering 18,000 square meters at Sangdangsanseong, a popular historical site in Cheongju frequented by thousands of visitors every weekend. The initiative is set to commence with the planting of canola seeds this month, anticipating that the flowers will be in full bloom by late April or early May. This addition aims to offer a colorful vista along with existing attractions like zinnias planted last year for late summer and chrysanthemums for the fall, promoting a year-round floral experience at this landmark.

Sangdangsanseong, originally constructed during the Three Kingdoms era, was later reconstructed into the stone fortress that stands today during the reign of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty in the 17th century. The site features historical remnants such as fortification gates and watchtowers that enhance its cultural significance. Currently, there are well-maintained trails spanning 4.4 kilometers around the fortress, making it a favorite destination for local residents and tourists alike.

By cultivating the canola field, Cheongju City hopes to provide visitors with distinct seasonal scenery that enriches their experience at Sangdangsanseong. The city’s cultural heritage facilities team leader noted that this project aims to draw in visitors year-round, allowing them to enjoy a unique aesthetic beauty not just in spring, but through all seasons.
