Cheongju Zoo showcases 'model for animal welfare' at the National Assembly
Cheongju Zoo is participating in a special exhibition on animal welfare at the National Assembly, aiming to promote best practices in animal care and management.
Cheongju Zoo, often recognized for its animal welfare efforts, is participating in a special exhibition titled 'Beyond Narrow Cages to Wide Enclosures' at the National Assembly from September 9 to 11. This event, organized in collaboration with members of Parliament from various parties and other animal welfare organizations, aims to highlight the current state of animal welfare, ongoing efforts, and international examples of effective animal care. Cheongju Zoo is showcasing its own initiatives, including experiences that simulate a veterinary clinic and its concept of a 'zoo without animals', emphasizing a progressive approach to animal welfare.
In the past year, Cheongju Zoo gained attention for rescuing a lion named 'Baram', who was in poor condition and referred to as a 'rib lion' due to severe malnutrition. Baram's rescue exemplifies the zoo's commitment to animal welfare, as the facility took in both Baram and his daughter 'Gureum', who had previously been living in a different zoo environment. After receiving care at Cheongju Zoo, Baram has made significant recovery, showcasing the zoo's effectiveness in rehabilitating and caring for animals.
Designated as a leading animal welfare hub in May 2024, Cheongju Zoo continues to set high standards in animal care and has received accolades for its efforts, including the Excellent Award from the Animal Welfare Forum in the National Assembly. The ongoing exhibition aims to inspire further discussions and initiatives related to animal welfare in South Korea, leveraging the visibility and influence of governmental platforms to push for better treatment and understanding of animals in captivity.
