IWD: Lagos celebrates female sanitation workers, approves free healthcare

Lagos Waste Management Authority celebrated female sanitation workers on International Women’s Day with free medical screenings and recognition awards.

On International Women’s Day, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) held a special event to celebrate and honor female sanitation workers across Lagos State. The event featured free medical screenings and recognition awards at the agency's headquarters in Ijora Olopa, acknowledging the significant contributions of these women to environmental sanitation. Among the participants were female street sweepers and other employees who were recognized for their hard work and dedication to maintaining cleanliness in the community.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, emphasized the importance of female sanitation workers in the operational success of the agency. He highlighted that their contributions are vital not only for the daily maintenance of sanitation but also for community health and environmental sustainability. The celebration served as a platform to promote awareness of the challenges faced by female workers in the sanitation sector and to provide them with resources that support their health and wellbeing.

The initiative reflects a broader commitment by the Lagos State government to support women in various sectors and promote gender equality. By providing free healthcare screenings and addressing the specific needs of female sanitation workers, LAWMA aims to empower these women and recognize their essential role in the state's sanitation efforts. This event also aligns with global efforts to promote women's rights and highlight the vital work that women do in traditionally undervalued roles.
