Speed in Quito is reduced by up to 11 km/h on key roads due to educational radars

Speed limits on certain roads in Quito have decreased by as much as 11 km/h due to the installation of educational radars.

In Quito, the implementation of educational radars has resulted in a decrease in vehicle speeds of up to 11 km/h on key roads since their installation in mid-January. According to the capital's municipality, statistical analysis conducted by the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) indicates a steady decline in traffic speeds. Reported reductions on specific routes vary, with reductions ranging from 3 km/h to 11 km/h.

The most significant decreases have been observed on the Simón Bolívar avenue and the Ruta Viva road. For instance, on Simón Bolívar (Emgirs), the average speed has dropped from 72 km/h to 61 km/h, showing a reduction of 11 km/h. Similarly, on the Ruta Viva (San Patricio sector), the average speed decreased from 76 km/h to 65 km/h, again a reduction of 11 km/h. These changes highlight the effectiveness of the educational radars in promoting safer driving conditions in these busy sectors of the city.

Moreover, on another section of Ruta Viva (La Morita sector), the average speed fell from 76 km/h to 67 km/h, reflecting a 9 km/h decrease. This trend reflects broader efforts by the Quito municipality to enhance road safety and address speeding issues, aiming for a safer urban environment for both drivers and pedestrians. As these educational radars continue to be monitored, further assessments may provide insights into long-term behavioral changes among motorists in Quito.
