South Korea supports Guayaquil in master plans for flooding, waste, and transport
South Korea is collaborating with Guayaquil to develop a comprehensive flood management plan as part of a broader urban planning initiative.
South Korea is extending its expertise to Guayaquil by assisting in the development of a Master Plan for an Intelligent Flood Management System. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the annual flooding challenges that the city faces, especially during the rainy season. South Korean specialists will be involved in real-time monitoring of flood data, updating existing studies, defining necessary projects, and preparing budget estimates along with exploring potential funding sources.
The collaboration is part of a broader agreement between Kotra, the South Korean Trade and Investment Agency, and the Municipal Government of Guayaquil. This ongoing partnership, now in its third year, focuses on enhancing urban planning initiatives within the city. The program is supported by the Economic Innovation Partnership Program (EIPP), which is a non-reimbursable cooperation mechanism established in 2023 between the two parties, reflecting a commitment to sustainable urban development.
The project is significant not just for Guayaquil but also represents a model of international cooperation in dealing with urban challenges. By leveraging South Korean technology and expertise, Guayaquil hopes to mitigate the impacts of flooding and improve its infrastructure for waste management and transportation, thus enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents and ensuring more resilient urban planning against climate change effects.
