Guayaquil identifies and marks 74 vulnerable sites to flooding and landslides

Guayaquil's municipality has identified 74 areas prone to flooding and landslides, implementing preventive measures with signage to inform the public.

The city of Guayaquil in Ecuador has recognized its vulnerability to natural disasters during the winter season, particularly flooding and landslides, which affect various sectors annually. In the current rainy season, several neighborhoods have already experienced significant flooding due to heavy rains. As a response to this persistent issue, the municipality has identified 74 critical locations that are at risk and has initiated a preventive campaign to mark these areas with signage that warns residents and advises them on potential hazards.

Of the identified locations, 44 have received specific preventive signage alerting the population to the risks of flooding, while 30 areas have been marked for possible landslides, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. The installation of these signs has been carried out by the Transit and Mobility Authority (ATM) in collaboration with the municipal company Segura E.P. The goal of these initiatives is to reduce risks and enhance public safety by ensuring that citizens are well-informed about the dangers in their environment.

This proactive approach highlights the municipality's commitment to disaster risk management, especially in a region that has faced increasing challenges due to climate change and severe weather patterns. By focusing on education and prevention through clear signage, Guayaquil aims to safeguard its residents and minimize the impact of natural disasters in the future, showing a model for other cities facing similar climatic vulnerabilities.
