MP finds irregularities in 287 nursing homes and institutions for people with disabilities in MG
The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais has discovered severe irregularities in 287 nursing homes and institutions for the disabled, revealing alarming conditions.
The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MP) reported alarming findings from inspections at 287 nursing homes and facilities for people with disabilities, highlighting egregious conditions such as shared hygiene items, structural issues, and inadequate sanitation. During these inspections, investigators found shocking practices like the use of communal clothing and towels, as well as unsanitary living conditions including overcrowded rooms and facilities with compromised infrastructure.
The situation received heightened scrutiny following a tragic incident where a nursing home in the Jardim Vitória neighborhood of Belo Horizonte collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals. This facility had been known to the authorities since 2017, having failed to meet previously established legal agreements aimed at improving safety and living conditions, labeling it as both "unsanitary" and “irregular”. The tragedy has drawn attention to the urgent need for reform in the management of care institutions.
In response to these serious findings, the MP held a press conference to address the conditions discovered during inspections and to outline the necessary steps to rectify them. The discovery sheds significant light on the oversight failures in the care of vulnerable populations in Minas Gerais and calls for immediate reforms to ensure the safety and dignity of individuals in such institutions.
