Public Ministry says that elderly home that collapsed in BH was under action since 2017, violated TAC and was 'unsanitary' and 'irregular'
The Public Ministry announced that an elderly care facility in Belo Horizonte, which collapsed, had been flagged for multiple irregularities since 2017 and was deemed unsanitary.
The Public Ministry of Brazil has revealed that the elderly home, 'Casa de Repouso Pró-Vida,' which recently collapsed in the Jardim Vitória neighborhood of Belo Horizonte, was identified as having serious structural and sanitary issues dating back to 2017. According to the report provided by prosecutor Jacqueline Ferreira Moisés, the facility was under continuous inspection since 2013 and failed to comply with the Terms of Adjustment of Conduct (TAC). Despite ten inspections, it was noted that the establishment had persistent issues such as leaks, damaged flooring, rusty support bars, and exposed electrical wiring, alongside inadequate living conditions without windows or leisure spaces for the elderly residents.
The inspections were conducted by various professionals, including architects and social workers, who pointed out extensive deficiencies in the facility. The prominent failures and the local authorities’ inability to rectify the concerns beforehand raise alarming questions about the safety regulations in place for such essential services and the enforcement of compliance measures concerning elderly care in Brazil. Despite numerous demands for improvements, the facility remained operational, putting vulnerable residents at risk.
The implications of this tragic event are profound as they spark a broader conversation about accountability and oversight in elderly care facilities across the nation. The incident not only underscores the dire need for stringent safety and health standards but also calls into question the responsibility of regulatory bodies in ensuring compliance. This unfortunate collapse serves as a critical reminder for authorities and communities to prioritize the welfare of the elderly and enforce necessary interventions to prevent future tragedies.
