From bien-avi to peregrine falcon: migratory birds gain prominence before COP15

Before COP15, experts emphasize the significance of Campo Grande for migratory bird species.

As the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP15/CMS) approaches, experts are highlighting the importance of Campo Grande in the context of biodiversity. Studies indicate that the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul is home to around 400 bird species in its urban and peri-urban areas, with approximately 20% classified as migratory species. This diversity underscores the critical role of the city in providing habitat for various bird populations, especially during transitional seasons.

From March 23 to 29, 2026, Campo Grande will host one of the major environmental events globally, organized by the United Nations (UN). It is anticipated that between 2,000 and 3,000 representatives from over 130 countries will participate in discussions surrounding global strategies for protecting migratory species. The conference will not only put a spotlight on the importance of migration in the animal kingdom but also showcase Campo Grande as a key player in conservation efforts, furthering its international recognition.

Known for its abundant green spaces, ecological parks, waterways, and a variety of vegetation spread throughout numerous neighborhoods, Campo Grande serves as an essential refuge for wildlife. This favorable environmental setup attracts migratory birds and plays a crucial role in their lifecycle, highlighting the interconnectedness of urban areas and natural habitats. As global discussions unfold, the city's ecological wealth will likely be pivotal in shaping policies aimed at the conservation of migrating species.
