RS registers focus of avian influenza in wild birds in ecological reserve

An outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) has been confirmed in wild birds at the Lagoa da Mangueira in the Taim Ecological Reserve, Rio Grande do Sul.

The Department of Surveillance and Defense of Animal Health (DDA) of the Government of Rio Grande do Sul has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) among wild birds found at Lagoa da Mangueira in the Taim Ecological Reserve. The affected birds were identified during routine monitoring in the region, which is known for its biodiversity and ecological significance. This detection raises alarms given the potentially contagious nature of the virus, primarily affecting avian species but can occasionally infect mammals and humans who come into direct contact with contaminated animals.

In response to the outbreak, the Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation Secretariat (Seapi) has assured that the situation does not compromise the state or the nation's standing as free from avian flu, indicating that there is no expected impact on the trade of poultry products. The clarification aims to alleviate concerns among farmers and consumers regarding the safety of poultry products, including meat and eggs, emphasizing that there is no risk posed by consuming these items as the disease does not transmit through food.

The confirmation of H5N1 cases in wild birds serves as a reminder of the ongoing vigilance required to monitor such diseases in wildlife, especially in ecologically sensitive areas. While public health risks are currently deemed low, the presence of the virus underscores the necessity for continued surveillance and education about biosecurity measures among those who may interact with wild birds and domestic poultry.
