More than 3,000 tons of recyclable material recovered in five cities of Ecuador
A total of 3,074.17 tons of recyclable materials were recovered in five cities of Ecuador as part of the Juntos Reciclamos Más initiative, supported by Fundación Recicla LATAM and major corporations.
The Juntos Reciclamos Más initiative, a collaborative program between Fundación Recicla LATAM, Coca-Cola, Arca Continental, and Grupo SMI, has successfully recovered a total of 3,074.17 tons of recyclable materials, predominantly PET plastic, across five major cities in Ecuador: Guayaquil, Quito, Daule, Durán, and Samborondón. This effort, which took place over the last 18 months, saw significant community engagement through a series of 'reciclatones' and community activations that involved citizens, students, businesses, and social organizations.
The initiative included ten recycling events held in public parks and educational institutions, such as Parque Samanes, Parque Histórico, Parque Bicentenario, and several universities including ESPOL, UEES, UTEG, and Universidad de Guayaquil. Each of these events was effective in collecting up to eight tons of recyclables, fostering a culture of recycling within the community. Additionally, these events provided direct support to grassroots recyclers by facilitating the proper collection and distribution of the accumulated materials.
Overall, Juntos Reciclamos Más not only achieved impressive quantities of recycling but also aimed to promote environmental education and social impact. The program's success reflects a growing commitment in Ecuador to environmental responsibility and the integration of sustainable practices at both individual and community levels, encouraging a circular economy model that addresses waste management and social challenges in unison.
