Meteorologists announce forecasts for the remainder of March: significant anomalies
Meteorologists in Lithuania predict that March will be significantly warmer and drier than usual, with temperatures up to 3 degrees Celsius above the norm.
According to the latest calculations from the ECMWF model, temperatures for March are expected to be up to 3 degrees Celsius higher than the norm, with precipitation forecasts around 70% below the average for 1991-2020. Similar results are reported by another long-term forecasting model (CFSv2), which also predicts temperatures 2-3 degrees higher and even lower precipitation levels of 80-90% less than the historical average for that period. Overall, March 2026 is projected to be considerably warmer and much drier than usual.
Looking back over previous years, March 2021 and 2022 were slightly warmer than normal, while March 2023 was warm and the forecasts for March 2024 and 2025 also indicate very warm conditions. Meanwhile, the overall precipitation levels in March 2021, 2022, and 2024-2025 were lower than the average, with March 2022 recording the least precipitation in the country's observation history. The last time March was wetter than average was in 2023, indicating a trend towards increasingly dry conditions in late winter and early spring.
Meteo.lt highlights these anomalies, showing a clear shift in weather patterns that could have implications for agriculture, water resources, and energy consumption as Lithuania experiences these warmer and drier conditions. The predictions serve as an important reminder of the effects of climate change in the region, potentially impacting various sectors and raising concerns over sustainable practices moving forward.
