A pioneering project in Paraná, Brazil, is transforming the use of road margins into productive agricultural areas, highly impacting rural economies and promoting responsible land utilization. Implemented by Via Araucária, which manages 473 kilometers of highways in the region, the project maps out over 220 segments alongside the roads that can be utilized for family farming. This initiative is authorized by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) and allows regular farmers to legally extend their planting areas, thereby generating additional income and making use of previously idle spaces.

One of the beneficiaries of this project is farmer Geomar Antônio Joslin, who expanded his plantation by almost 10 hectares thanks to this initiative. He is now able to cultivate crops like potatoes and beans along the roadside. The project addresses the issue of restricted planting space in Araucária, located in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, where industrial growth has limited available farmland. By utilizing neglected areas, the project not only increases local agricultural production but also helps integrate rural farming into the regional economy.
