Unproductive Margins

Argentina has a vast road network with extensive roadside areas that are underutilized and could potentially offer economic value.

Argentina boasts one of the largest road networks in Latin America, comprising over 36,000 kilometers of paved roads. Unfortunately, only about 10% of these roads are highways, leaving a significant portion of land along the roadsides (known as banquinas) largely unutilized. The national traffic law established in 1994 mandates that public roadways and their adjacent zones be dedicated primarily to vehicular circulation and road safety, ensuring that the security strip adjacent to the asphalt surface, which typically extends between 3 to 5 meters, is well-maintained. However, many stretches of these roads have several meters of additional land available right up to the fencing, resulting in a situation where these areas remain completely wasted.
