Roads Flood After the Gurguéia River Swells in City in Southern Piauí

The overflowing Gurguéia River has flooded roads in the southern Piauí city of Cristino Castro, impacting traffic and raising safety concerns.

In the city of Cristino Castro, located in southern Piauí, Brazil, the Gurguéia River has overflowed its banks, leading to significant flooding on local roads and portions of the BR-135 highway. The flooding has caused water to inundate the road connecting Cristino Castro to Palmeira do Piauí, complicating travel for residents and visitors. The situation worsened after heavy rains fell on the region, which peaked on Sunday, forcing the closure of some rural roads as water levels continued to rise.

The local Civil Defense reported that the rains not only increased the river's water volume but also resulted in flooding in various neighborhoods of Cristino Castro. Videos shared by residents depict vehicles struggling to navigate through large puddles, with traffic becoming severely hindered. Authorities have responded to the situation, with the Federal Highway Police deploying a team to the area to ensure the safety of motorists although the road remains open for now.

Concerns have been raised over the safety of traveling across areas affected by the flooding, particularly on the bridge over the Gurguéia River towards Chifre Fino, where strong currents have made the structure unsafe for vehicles. As weather patterns remain fickle, further weather advisories and warnings may be necessary to prevent accidents and additional risks to public safety in the region.
