Rains in Piauí destroy crops, break roads, and interrupt classes; see the damage
Heavy rains in southern Piauí have caused significant damage to crops, roads, and educational institutions.
Since Wednesday, October 25, torrential rains in southern Piauí, Brazil, have wreaked havoc, destroying farmland, rupturing rural roads, and suspending classes across various municipalities. In São Gonçalo do Gurguéia, located 789 km south of Teresina, the floods swept away crops, livestock, and made local roads impassable, leading to heightened concerns about farmers' losses as a river overflowed into communities.
Local agricultural official Edvanilton Maciel de Paiva reported that tributaries in the region also overflowed, severely impacting agricultural production. In Corrente, rainfall accumulation reached between 105 and 142 millimeters within just 24 hours, prompting emergency measures as roads became untraversable and classes were suspended. The municipality's situation was declared an emergency following the flooding of the Corrente River.
Furthermore, Riacho Frio faced similar devastation, with families left homeless and roads inundated, while the structural integrity of a bridge was compromised, raising concerns about potential collapse. Local authorities, including the Defense Civil, are likely to respond to assess damages and assist affected families, highlighting the urgent need for support to recover from this natural disaster.
