Democratic Party: 'Offside goals are canceled'... Speeding up cancellation of the president's case
The Democratic Party's leader, Jeong Cheong-rae, stated that goals scored from offside positions in soccer should be canceled, drawing a parallel to the call for the cancellation of charges against President Lee Jae-myung, which they claim are politically motivated and based on fabricated accusations.
On September 9, Jeong Cheong-rae, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, made a statement regarding the recently revealed evidence suggesting that the prosecution manipulated the case against President Lee Jae-myung. Drawing an analogy to soccer, he argued that goals scored from offside positions must be canceled, implying that the charges against the president should also be dropped as they are seen as unjust. This comment comes in the wake of leaked recordings that indicate the prosecution pressured a former head of a company to provide false statements in connection with investigations into funds allegedly sent to North Korea.
Jeong emphasized the need for a national inquiry into what he describes as fabricated charges against President Lee, advocating for an independent special investigation to address these allegations. He remarked on a policy seminar organized by the party's committee focusing on probing the prosecution's practices under the Yoon Suk-yeol government, highlighting the serious implications of the leaked information which he asserts demonstrates clear manipulation of legal processes by state authorities aimed at removing political opposition.
The Democratic Party plans to present demands for a national inquiry covering seven different cases, many involving former President Yoon and his administration's alleged misdeeds. The opposition faced criticism from the ruling People Power Party, who accused them of attempting to protect Lee Jae-myung through this inquiry, yet there appears to be a lack of concern from within the ruling party regarding these criticisms, reflecting a deepening political divide in South Korean governance.
