Democratic Party's 'Prosecution Cancellation Meeting' is Launched... A Full-scale Grouping Against the President
The Democratic Party of Korea officially launched a meeting aimed at advocating for the cancellation of prosecutions against President Lee Jae-myung, drawing significant participation from party members opposed to current leadership.
On December 12, the Democratic Party of Korea held an official launch for a new organization focused on the cancellation of prosecutions against President Lee Jae-myung and the push for a national investigation. This group has garnered the participation of over half of the Democratic Party's 162 lawmakers, predominantly from the faction opposing the current leadership. The ongoing power struggles within the party, initially surfacing during discussions about a merger with another political party, continue to manifest as tensions rise over the party's leadership dynamics, which are being analyzed as a division between the pro-Lee faction and the pro-current leadership faction.
Park Sung-joon, who leads the newly formed group, stated at a press conference at the National Assembly that President Lee is under political prosecution, facing charges related to the Daejang-dong scandal and other offenses. He outlined their objectives, which include the cancellation of the prosecutions, an investigation into the political prosecution, and the imposition of penalties on the political prosecutors in a phased manner. A rally combining the group's official launch is scheduled for December 23, indicating a significant mobilization of support for these initiatives.
The formation of this group is reportedly driven by Lee Geon-tae, a lawmaker associated with Lee Jae-myung during legal controversies. Critics see this collective as an attempt by non-mainstream factions within the party to consolidate power ahead of the upcoming party convention in August. Some observers have noted that promoting the prosecution issue as a rallying point may inadvertently draw renewed focus to President Lee's judicial challenges, creating unintentional consequences for the party dynamics ahead. This situation presents a complicated narrative within the Democratic Party as it navigates internal conflicts and external pressures in preparation for the next political cycle.
