139 traffic accidents occurred at the Jüri intersection in Rae municipality last year
Last year, the Jüri roundabout in Rae municipality experienced 139 traffic accidents, making it the most accident-prone intersection for the second consecutive year.
In 2022, the Jüri roundabout in Rae municipality stood out as the most notorious traffic accident site, accounting for 139 incidents that resulted in a total community damage of €394,000, according to the traffic insurance fund. This trend reflects ongoing safety concerns associated with this busy intersection, highlighting the region's growing traffic management challenges.
The report indicated that a staggering 75% of these accidents were rear-end collisions, compared to the national average of 39% for roundabouts. Notably, the frequency of such incidents has attracted attention to the role of heavy vehicles, particularly trucks, which were identified as responsible for 15% of the accidents at this site. This is a significant proportion compared to the overall statistics for Estonia, where trucks accounted for only 6% of accident-causing vehicles, showing a discrepancy that warrants further investigation and potentially legislative action to enhance road safety.
Despite the alarming figures specific to the Jüri roundabout, a slight overall decrease was noted in traffic insurance incidents across Estonia, with a reported decline of 3% in 2025 compared to the previous year. In total, 32,601 traffic incidents were registered nationwide, leading to a community cost of €77 million. This suggests that while progress has been made in reducing traffic incidents broadly, specific problem areas like the Jüri roundabout still require targeted interventions to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
