Insurers Warn: This Year It Is Dangerous Even on Major Highways

Insurers in Lithuania have warned that the risk of accidents, particularly due to potholes, is significantly higher this spring compared to past years.

In Lithuania, insurers have raised concerns about the increased dangers on the roads this spring, citing a notable spike in vehicle damage incidents since the beginning of the year. According to BTA, nearly 600 cases of damage due to potholes were reported in January and February alone. The early appearance of potholes this season has caught drivers off guard, as in previous years these issues would typically only emerge once warmer weather set in, leading to unexpected vehicle repairs and heightened risk for road users.

The director of the Road Research Institute at VILNIUS TECH, Dr. Ovidijus Ε ernas, emphasized that the rapidly changing weather conditions contribute to the formation of potholes and other road hazards. Fluctuating temperatures cause water to seep into the cracks of the road surface, freezing overnight and expanding, which progressively degrades the road structure. This cyclical damage cycle poses significant challenges for drivers who must navigate increasingly perilous road conditions, with serious complaints already being reported by motorists.

The early spring pothole boom is not only a traffic safety hazard but could also lead drivers to question the adequacy of road maintenance and infrastructure investment in Lithuania. With the potential for increased accidents and insurance claims, authorities may need to reassess their strategies for maintaining road safety as changing weather patterns continue to affect the state of roads throughout the country.
