Roads remain very slippery in places – road workers report where the situation is most dangerous

Road conditions in Lithuania are hazardous due to persistent ice formation, particularly on rural gravel roads where road maintenance crews are actively working.

Recent weather conditions in Lithuania have led to a significant increase in icy road conditions, particularly at night when temperatures drop below freezing despite daytime highs being positive. Road maintenance crews, numbering over 350, have been deployed to address these icy conditions, covering more than 45,000 kilometers in their efforts to keep the roads safe. As of Wednesday morning, around 100 machines are actively responding to local icy patches to ensure that the roads remain navigable and safe for drivers.

According to road maintenance representative R. Zagrebajevas, the most critical situations are occurring on regional gravel roads, where the icy conditions are particularly treacherous. These areas require specialized attention from crews, who not only clear the roads but also improve water drainage and strengthen road foundations in anticipation of further thawing. The authorities emphasize the importance of caution among drivers as the combination of icy patches and fluctuating weather continues to pose risks.

Looking ahead, the midweek forecast suggests that Lithuania will experience a cold spell, meaning that both roads and sidewalks will likely be affected by ice accumulation. The situation calls for continued vigilance from both road maintenance teams and the public to prevent accidents and ensure safe travel conditions during these challenging weather conditions.
