Founding of the Daejeon Alumni Association of Democracy for the 3.8 Democratic Movement

Graduates of Daejeon High School have established an alumni association to commemorate the 3.8 Democratic Movement against the dictatorship during the Rhee Syng-man regime.

Graduates from Daejeon High School, which played a central role in the 3.8 Democratic Movement during the era of the 4.19 Revolution, have founded a democratic alumni association. The establishment ceremony held on the 8th at the 3.8 Democratic Movement Memorial Hall highlighted the motivation behind the formation of this group, emphasizing that the voices of the 3.8 Democratic Movement, alongside other significant protests, became enduring flames for the democratization of South Korea.

The alumni stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who stood on the front lines of the democratization movement against military dictatorship during the 1970s and 1980s. Many alumni suffered severe repercussions, including torture and trauma, some of whom died early while others continue to face social isolation. There remains a call for the truth regarding the victims yet to be fully acknowledged, as the current democracy in South Korea is rooted in their noble sacrifices which must not be forgotten.

The constitution of the Daejeon Alumni Association reflects a concerted effort to transcend established privileges and ideologies, aiming to adhere to values of freedom, equality, and peace. The association aspires to support its alma mater’s democratic operation and healthy growth while fostering inter-generational connections and collaboration among alumni. By promoting a democratic community, they intend to practice mutual support and remembrance of past struggles, thereby enhancing community solidarity and integrity in the present and future.
