Nigeria: AfCFTA - Trade Minister Urges Stronger Support for Women-Led Businesses
Nigeria's Trade Minister emphasizes the need to support women-led businesses to enhance the country's role in intra-African trade efforts under the AfCFTA.
Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, emphasized the importance of empowering women-led enterprises as essential to Nigeria's strategies for leading intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Speaking at a colloquium in Abuja, she highlighted that integrating these businesses into formal trade systems is vital for unlocking their economic potential.
Oduwole pointed out that although women play a crucial role in the economy, their talents and productivity are often underutilized. She asserted that meaningful economic transformation in Nigeria hinges on the establishment of competitive and productive enterprises capable of high-scale manufacturing, processing, and exporting. The Minister's remarks reflect a broader recognition that women's economic empowerment is not just a social issue but a vital area for economic growth and development.
The call for stronger support measures for women-led businesses comes at a critical time when Nigeria seeks to enhance its participation in African trade. Oduwole's message underscores that true economic prosperity stems from robust production rather than merely the presence of markets, thereby advocating for policy reforms that address the barriers faced by women entrepreneurs.
