FG plans to unlock $1tn economy by funding women-led businesses
The Nigerian Federal Government aims to enhance economic growth by increasing funding for women-led businesses, highlighting the need to address a significant financing gap faced by these enterprises.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has recognized that enhancing access to capital for women-led businesses is crucial for stimulating the nation's industrial growth and leveraging opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area. According to Jumoke Oduwole, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, addressing the estimated over $49 billion financing gap for women-owned businesses on the continent is essential for enabling them to expand their operations and compete effectively in broader markets. This initiative was underscored during a high-level policy dialogue held on International Women’s Day in Abuja, aimed at discussing ways to boost financial opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
The event, which drew together a diverse group of stakeholders including policymakers, investors, and development partners, focused on the theme “Give to Gain.” Oduwole emphasized the potential for increased financing to not only empower women entrepreneurs but also enhance Nigeria’s overall participation in Africa’s integrating trade landscape. The discussions reflected a broader commitment to tackling gender disparities in business financing, which has persisted as a barrier to economic growth and competitiveness for female entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, the minister’s remarks suggest a shift in policy focus towards inclusion and support for women-led enterprises as a strategy to navigate global trade dynamics. By unlocking the potential of these businesses, Nigeria aims to bolster its economy, contributing to the ambitious goal of creating a $1 trillion economy. Such strategic efforts could have lasting implications for job creation and economic resilience within Nigeria, especially in the context of increasing competition across the African market and beyond.
