Direct flights between Qatar were cut off... Over 300 citizens evacuated on emergency flights
Due to the worsening situation in the Middle East, over 300 South Korean nationals were evacuated from Qatar on emergency flights.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, direct flights between South Korea and Qatar have been suspended, leading to emergency measures for the evacuation of South Korean citizens. On April 9, over 300 South Koreans departed Doha on Qatar Airways, facilitated by the South Korean governmentβs diplomatic efforts. The flight, which was specially arranged after negotiations with the Qatari government, is set to arrive at Incheon International Airport around 12:21 AM on April 10.
The South Korean embassy in Qatar has been actively engaging with local authorities and airlines to resume regular flight operations in order to assist its nationals wishing to return home. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Qatari government accepted their request to arrange an emergency flight with a capacity of 395 seats, emphasizing the coordinated effort to ensure citizens' safety amid travel restrictions.
In the lead-up to the flight, the embassy conducted a survey to determine how many citizens wished to return, with about 400 expressing interest. Ultimately, 303 confirmed their willingness to board the emergency flight. The embassy continues to monitor the situation, as there were reports of additional requests from citizens wishing to evacuate on the day of departure. This situation underscores the complexities of international travel during crises, as governments strive to safeguard their citizens abroad while navigating operational hurdles in affected regions.
