Government dispatches rapid response team to Dubai and Oman... Continued evacuation of Koreans in the Middle East
The South Korean government is deploying a joint rapid response team to the Middle East to assist nationals stranded by the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
In response to the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, the South Korean government has decided to send a joint rapid response team composed of officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Police Agency to Dubai and Oman. According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il, this team includes two ambassadors with experience in the Middle East and consular affairs to ensure the safe evacuation of South Korean citizens in the region. The team is scheduled to depart early on the 6th and will collaborate with local embassies to facilitate the evacuation process.
Currently, around 21,000 South Koreans, which includes approximately 4,000 tourists, are believed to be in the Middle East, with over 2,000 staying in Dubai alone. The government has reported no identified casualties among its citizens so far and is actively assisting those wishing to evacuate to move safely to nearby countries. This assistance includes support from various embassies in the region, helping citizens either evacuate to neighboring countries or return home, with specific cases of evacuations already being executed in Egypt and Turkmenistan.
In addition to the rapid response team, the Foreign Ministry is assessing the possibility of deploying chartered or military aircraft to aid in the repatriation of its citizens. Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin mentioned that the government is making arrangements for charter flights and is contemplating military transport options if necessary, all while monitoring the reopening of certain flight routes. Such contingency plans are considered vital as concerns rise over the potential prolongation of airspace closures in the region, and measures must be taken to ensure the swift and effective return of South Koreans from increasingly troubled areas.
