Psychoactive drugs found with two market vendors in Klaipėda – both narrowly avoided prison
Two women in Klaipėda were found with a large quantity of psychoactive substances, leading to legal consequences.
In Klaipėda, Lithuania, two women were discovered possessing significant amounts of psychoactive drugs during a raid at a market stall where they worked. The authorities found a total of 140 tablets of 'Phenibut,' which are illegal to sell without proper documentation. The 55-year-old vendor, who had been conducting individual business activities, was implicated along with a 39-year-old saleswoman, both of whom did not possess the legal rights to hold or trade in these substances.
In addition to the drugs found in the market, the older woman was also reported to have around 15 tablets of 'Phenazepam' and 10 more tablets of 'Phenibut' at her home in the Klaipėda district. This further highlights the worrying trend of illicit drug distribution in Lithuanian cities, where payments were reportedly being made through cryptocurrencies, reflecting a modern method of dealing in illegal products. The law enforcement agency seized all the psychoactive substances from the two women during the operation.
The 55-year-old woman was found guilty under articles 259 and 260 of the Criminal Code, which deal with illegal drug possession and distribution, respectively. She received a sentence of 1 year and 9 months, although the execution of the sentence was suspended for 2 years, allowing her to remain free for the time being. This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling drug-related offenses in Lithuania, especially with the increasing use of digital currencies for illegal transactions.
